What is Live Sketching? Does it refer to illustrating models at fashion shows? At events? As a portrait artist? Or surreptitiously sketching members of the public? Or is it simply an alternative term for life-drawing? (maybe used to outfox a censorious Instagram algorithm!!)

Live Sketching can mean many things to many people. What they all have in common is that they involve drawing and being in-the-moment. You may be at a life drawing class, on-location or on Zoom. You may be discreetly scribbling passengers on the subway system. Sketching people hanging out outside a fashion show or at any other event. But you will need to be ready to draw, quickly and without worrying too much about the end result.

Live Sketching involves embracing the process more than the result. Using different tools and being ready to deal with mishaps and drawings not going as imagined. There is no turning back. No time for faint pencil marks, no time for erasers (a wise art teacher once told me to burn my eraser!)

Live Sketching also means being prepared for members of the public to look over your shoulder and watch your work unfold. We need to be mentally prepared to deal with this! We are not painting an oil painting in solitude in the studio. We are not necessarily creating a 'finished piece' We are embracing imperfections and boldly making our mark!
